TOURISM COUNSELOR

The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce is an organization whereby many different business interests have joined together in a combined manner to maximize their ability to attract and increase the number of visitors to Chincoteague Island. The ultimate goal of the organization is to communicate the message that Chincoteague, the “Beautiful Land Across the Water,” is the most desirable location to visit and/or vacation with family or friends.

Job Description: 

The Tourism Counselor is a part-time position reporting directly to the Executive Director. This role requires a friendly, dependable individual who enjoys engaging with visitors, residents, and chamber members both in person at the Chamber office and over the phone. Hospitality and tourism experience a plus but not required.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Provide a warm, welcoming presence to all who call or visit the Chamber office. Greet all visitors with a smile in a timely manner and all callers in a pleasant manner. A helpful, positive, cheerful attitude is required in all interactions with visitors, chamber staff, board members, and members.

2. Develop a working knowledge of our chamber members and their products or services to make informed referrals. We are a membership-based organization, and this support is key to their success.

3. Learn and operate basic office equipment for daily tasks such as mailing, credit card transactions, answering phones, making copies, sending emails, and selling merchandise or festival tickets.

4. Stay up to date on local happenings, including events and activities around Chincoteague Island and the surrounding area.

5. Gain familiarity with Chincoteague and Assateague Islands, including locations, attractions, directions, seasonal schedules, and resources. Be as helpful as possible, and when unsure, connect visitors with someone who can assist. Know key contacts and follow up with visitors when appropriate.

6. Maintain organized and updated visitor materials, including brochures and rack cards. Monitor supply levels, contact businesses when restocking is needed, and keep the storage areas tidy and current.

7. Conduct lodging and boat availability surveys for peak weekends and events. 

8. Represent the Chamber at chamber and tourism events as requested by the Executive Director.

9. Support the Chamber team with various administrative and program needs.

10. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Work Schedule: 

Regular hours are Saturdays from 9:00am – 4:30pm at the Chamber office. Additional hours will be available to support staff during special events, meetings, and activities, and as staffing needs increase during peak tourism periods.
