The Chincoteague Island Library is the "Little Library That Could" and has been serving the residents of Chincoteague, our Eastern Shore neighbors and our many seasonal visitors since July 4, 1995.  Free and open to the public, the library is independent, supported by private donations and grants, and staffed by over 30 volunteers and part-time staff provided by the Eastern Shore Public Library (ESPL).  We are affiliated with ESPL sharing collections and following its rules and procedures.

Our collections include current and popular books, audio books, e-books, DVDs, a basic reference collection, local history collection, magazines, and newspapers.  Six public computers are available to the public for email, word processing, and surfing the Net.  Printing and faxing are available for a small fee.  The Library also offers 24-hour wireless internet connection (password:  IslandLibrary).

Tales 4 Tots, our year-round story time, is offered for children aged 2–5 years old.  Summer children’s programs include Young Explorers for children aged 6 – 10 years old and the Summer Incentive Reading Program for children added 5–12 years old.  Tales 4 Tots and Young Explorers programs include visits from The Nature Conservancy, NASA Outreach, The Delmarva Discovery Center, Salisbury Zoo-2-You, Smart Beginnings and the Chincoteague Bay Field Station.  These children’s programs are free and open to all - residents and visitors alike.

We also offer programs for adults—book clubs, author visits, poetry readings, as well as special events including our “First Night of Summer” Sunset Cruise, the Labor Day Weekend Indoor Yard Sale, and “Black, White & Read All Over” Gala.  We invite all to participate in these special events and programs.

The Library participates with the Chamber of Commerce for the Annual Christmas Parade; the Historic Downtown Merchants’ Association for “Death by Chocolate,” “Search for the Shamrocks,” Fun Fridays, and the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony; The Museum of Chincoteague for our joint Community Heritage Project; and with the Chincoteague Island Arts Organization (CIAO) and the Chincoteague Cultural Arts (CCA).
