Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge - hiring Park Ranger (Fee Collector) GS-0025-04 from May – October 2024. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge protects beach, dune, marsh, and maritime forest habitats. Originally established in 1943 to protect migratory birds, this refuge is now one of the most visited in the United States. This gem of Eastern Virginia is a birder's paradise, as well as the home of cultural treasures such as Assateague Lighthouse and the world-famous Chincoteague ponies. The refuge is seeking, full-time, temporary fee collectors (not to exceed 180 days), to assist with entrance fee collection/pass sales and other Visitor Services activities.
Activities fee collectors will be assisting with include:
- Collecting fees and selling passes (primarily at entrance fee booths) and safeguarding and balancing collected funds.
- Maintaining records on accountable passes and stock items and controlling vehicular traffic while answering visitor questions.
- Explaining regulations to visitors and providing information and advice on approved activities and the refuge’s cultural, historical, and natural resources.
- At the Visitor Center, answering visitor questions related to largely factual situations such as geographical location of facilities, tour routes, and recreational areas.
- Answering visitor questions and explaining regulations at a variety of refuge locations. (ex. Over-sand Vehicle Zone entrances and Assateague Lighthouse).
Minimum Requirements:
- U.S. Citizen or National.
- Resume.
- Service issued uniform worn in accordance with uniform policy.
- Background investigation.

Island Community House – Seeking volunteers for Village Neighbors program.
Chincoteague Natural History Association - Interested in history, fantastic views, and working with visitors? Come join the team of Assateague Lighthouse volunteers. Learn details of the upcoming season with lead volunteers, Peter Pullman and Larry Welsh on April 3 at 10am at the Herbert H. Bateman Classroom. This year they are hoping to have a large enough team to expand access to the lighthouse to 2 days/week. Open 10am - 3:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day then Saturdays from Labor Day to Thanksgiving. Morning and afternoon shifts will be available.

The NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center is seeking local volunteers with an interest in communicating and learning about upcoming NASA missions to help share the contributions Wallops makes to science and space exploration. Volunteers play a vital role in helping the visitor center provide fun, educational experiences for all ages through daily operations, special events, and rocket launch viewings.
