Museum of Chincoteague Island Living History Series

A showcase of wonderful storytellers sharing their knowledge about life, work and heritage on Chincoteague.  Public Archeology Dig with the Fairfield Foundation at the original site of the Captain Timothy Hill House off of Deep Hole Road, sponsored by Tidewater Virginia Historical Society.  This dig, led by professional archaeologists from the Fairfield Foundation and sponsored by the Tidewater Historical Society, will allow volunteers with no prior experience to learn about and participate in real archaeological excavation. Excavators of all ages are welcome, and there is no charge for this activity. 12th Annual Chincoteague Plein Air Painting Event

Over 45 artists will spend 3 days painting outdoors on Assateague and Chincoteague Islands. On Saturday evening, September 12, from 6pm - 9pm those framed paintings will be on exhibit for viewing and sale. Natural Dyeing Workshop
Chincoteague Bay Field Station.  9am - 3pm.  For thousands of years before the discovery of chemical dyes, people used the flowers, roots, nuts and berries of plants to produce colors for fiber and textiles.  Come and learn several modern techniques for this ancient art.  Participants will dye fibers using traditional and local plant sources.  Tuition is $55/person (includes lunch).  To register call (757) 824-5636 or visit Chincoteague Bay Field Station online.

Native American Tools & Flint Knapping Workshop
Chincoteague Bay Field Station.  9am - 3pm.  Take a voyage back in time and learn the ancient skill of stone tool making.  Working with glass and flint, class participants will focus on the proper form and early stages of reduction, which include percussion flaking and bi-facing.  Tools and materials will be provided and each student will receive a flint knapping tool kit to take home.  Tuition is $125/person (includes lunch).  To register call (757) 824-5636 or visit Chincoteague Bay Field Station online.
