Cancelled–Pony Event Schedule

*****ONLINE AUCTION OF 2020 FOALS JULY 23-30, 2020******

AUCTION INFO! AUCTION INFO! AUCTION INFO!

For Immediate release

Charles Town, WV, June 29, 2020

For the first time since WWII, the Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction has been cancelled. Officials in Virginia cancelled the annual event and associated activities due to Covid-19. The swim would have marked its 95th year.

The auction will be an entirely online event hosted by longtime Chincoteague auctioneer Tim Jennings and his wife, Cathy, through their company, SportHorseAuctions.com, LLC. “We would much rather be in Chincoteague, with our Island family”, said Tim Jennings, “but we are happy to offer our services with our online platform”.

Dates of the auction have been set, with bidding opening Thursday, July 23rd and closing Thursday, July 30. The dates were chosen to keep as much continuity as possible, since July 30th would have been the date of the live auction.

Prospective buyers will need to go to the auction website, and create an account. They will then need to request a bidder’s number in order to bid. Please visit the website at SportHorseAuctions.com for more information.

The SportHorseAuctions.com team produces North America's Leading Online Auctions for Horses. The management team pioneered internet auctions for horses and has produced nearly 80 Internet Auctions since 2012 boasting a high seller of $226,000.

Tim and Cathy are the industry's most experienced show horse auction managers. Our team managed more than 380 live horse auctions selling over 80,000 horses since 1978. Tim’s previous firm, Professional Auction Services, was the largest show horse auction company in the world, by number of horses sold for 15 years.

May 18, 2020: ANNOUNCEMENT FOR RELEASE ON THE 2020 CARNIVAL & PONY PENNING CELEBRATION

From: Alex Tucker, President of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, Inc.

Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic and after carefully analyzing the three Phases as set forth by Governor Northam for opening Virginia, the Board of Directors of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company voted to cancel the 2020 Chincoteague Volunteer Fireman’s Carnival & Pony Penning celebration scheduled to begin July 2, 2020. Please understand that this was not an easy decision to make, with the last pony penning being cancelled over 78 years ago during the second World War. We know how much this community loves this fire company and supports our carnival but with the restrictions put into the phases to prevent the spread of the corona virus, it was the only logical decision to make.

With this said, the foals of the pony herd will be sold by way of online auction, with a date to be determined by the Pony Committee. Plans are still being arranged as to where the ponies will physically be during the auction and we encourage you to keep a close watch on the developments as plans are made public on the auction. Our longtime auctioneer Tim Jennings will be conducting the auction and it should be a positive event for this fire company.

I pray all of you are staying safe, and please don’t hesitate to call us if you need us. We will always be here for you!

Alex Tucker, President
Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, Inc

At “slack tide”– The Chincoteague Ponies will swim across the Assateague Channel, led by the Saltwater Cowboys, just south of Veterans Memorial Park (7427 Memorial Park Dr,  Chincoteague Island, VA  23336) on the east side of Chincoteague Island called Pony Swim Lane. Folks wishing to view the swim from Pony Swim Lane are advised to wear appropriate attire—old clothing and closed toe shoes or muck boots—as this area is very muddy.

There is no charge by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company for parking or seeing the ponies swim. The Town of Chincoteague provides a large Jumbotron to enhance the Pony Swim experience at Veterans Memorial Park. The only parking at this location is designated for tour buses. All those seeking handicap parking and all day-trippers are encouraged to go to the Municipal Center (6150 Community Drive, Chincoteague Island, VA  23336) and catch the free shuttle. There will be a handicap accessible bus for your convenience.  Those staying on the island may catch a shuttle bus near their lodging. Shuttles begin at 5am and end one hour after the ponies arrive at the Carnival grounds.

Charter boats are also available for watching the Pony Swim. Call the chamber office at 757-336-6161 for assistance in finding available seats. Spaces fill up quickly so don’t wait until the last minute.

The first foal to come ashore will be named King or Queen Neptune and will be given away in a raffle drawing at the carnival grounds bandstand at 7pm.  Tickets are sold each night at the carnival and during the wait time for the swim. You must have a ticket and you must be present to win.

After swimming the short distance across the channel, the ponies will rest for approximately 45 minutes to an hour before “parading” to the carnival grounds on Main Street. See shuttle bus map for parade route.

The carnival will be held from 7pm – 11pm with rides, games, and lots of good food.

Note: Pets are not permitted in Memorial Park or the Carnival Grounds.

The annual pony auction raises funds for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and for the veterinary care of the ponies. The auction also serves to help control the pony population on Chincoteague Island. Foals will be auctioned at 8am on the Carnival grounds, and winners will receive certificates of purchase from the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.

Select ponies, designated as “buy backs,” will also be auctioned, but returned to the herd to help maintain the population. Each winner of a “buy back” pony gets to name their adopted pony, and proceeds from the auction are donated to regional charity. The “buy back” auctions are typically the most popular at this event, so if you’re interested in naming a Chincoteague pony be ready to bid!

A few tips to remember:

1. Be there early if you wish to bid on a pony. The crowds are huge and you will want a space as close to the front as possible.

2. Wear a sun hat and sunscreen. Bring plenty to drink. A pencil and paper are always useful. A camera is nice. A folding chair is a great idea as bleachers will not be available due to insurance restrictions. UPDATED 7/17/2019.

3. You do not have to register for the auction. If you raise your hand during the auctioneer’s chant, you ARE MAKING A BID.
