During the Summer Reading Challenge children can select any reading materials and topics that they enjoy. Studies indicate that children will read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests.
If a child does not already have a library card, this is a great opportunity to sign up for one. A parent or guardian must accompany any child who wants to get a library card. Children who just want to register and get their reading logs and information do not have to be accompanied by a parent. Children should turn in their completed logs to the Library on August 16 at 11:00 AM when a “wrap-up party” will be held. Refreshments will be served, and readers will receive a library bag of “back to school” supplies. Children who cannot attend the wrap-up party can still turn in their log through August 25 and receive their bag of goodies.
“Free and voluntary reading helps children become better, readers, writers, and spellers.” Notes president of the Chincoteague Island Library, Linda Ryan. She added “The Summer Reading Challenge encourages that reading become a lifelong habit and helps children keep up their skills over the summer months. And it is fun!”
Children can still participate by signing up and picking up their reading logs at the Library anytime during regular business hours between June 8 – June 23. LEARN MORE
