After the new Congress begins its session, a new effort to ensure legislators hear about support for the facility will be important as the Fiscal Year 2000 Appropriation decision process begins.

A Few Key Points

With over 1.5 million visitors per year and a vital need to educate these visitors with a better facility than the current small, 10-person mini-auditorium in the contact station, the $1.5 million appropriation can be seen in perspective - an investment of only about $1 per tax paying visitor!
The strategic location of the refuge in the mid-Atlantic, within a day's drive of Washington D.C., makes the refuge readily accessible to foreign visitors as well as 37 million Americans - the benefits reach beyond the state of Virginia.
Funding the Planning and Design process NOW will ensure that the local community, educators, and partner environmental groups have an active role in guiding the sustainable design, environmental sensitivity, and educational value of the new facility - especially for environmental education of the children, our future!
The new facility will replace 5 different aging buildings with associated maintenance needs; be built in the location of current buildings; and be accompanied by restoration of critical habitat where the old buildings are removed.
