Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce Honors
2017 Business Persons and Citizen of the Year

Bobby Conner was honored as the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce 2017 Outstanding Business Person of the Year. His love of working on the water brought him back to his hometown after a few jobs in Newport News, DC, and at NASA after graduating from Chincoteague High School. He started Conner & McGee Seafood and grew it to a very well-established business with partner Mike McGee. In 1988, Bobby and his wife Roseanne opened The Village Restaurant where Bobby still works today, mostly behind the scenes shucking oysters, ordering supplies, prepping or cooking. He takes pride in hiring local people and treats them like family, working alongside his three children, their spouses, and grandchildren.  His generous spirit is apparent as he donates to causes, events, and organizations to help those in his community.

Denise Bowden received the honor of the 2017 Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award. Her years of dedicated service to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company; her selfless giving to those in need; and her deep, passionate love for the Chincoteague Island community were reasons for her nomination and selection. Currently acting as CVFC Public Relations Officer, she works closely with the chamber on Pony Penning events and media. Denise was elected to Town Council in 2016 with enough votes to become Vice Mayor. Her thoughtful attention to detail and respect for people’s feelings is evident. She is an entrepreneur who has owned several businesses over the years and currently operates a land-based tour of her beloved island called Teaguer’s Tump Tours.
