To Note:
Pets are not permitted in Memorial Park (the site of the pony swim).
Coast Guard on Alert for Illegal Charter Boats During Chincoteague Pony Swim (PDF format)
(The Coast Guard is cautioning tourists attending the pony swim to avoid boats that do not have licensed captains, and in some cases have not been inspected by the Coast Guard.)

Between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (the time can not be predicted exactly - dependent on tide, currents, and readiness of ponies) ponies swim Assateague Channel at Chincoteague Memorial Park - east side of island. No charge by Fire Co. for parking (at High School - click here) or seeing ponies swim. After a brief rest, ponies are herded to Carnival Grounds.

The first colt to come ashore in the pony swim (King or Queen Neptune) will be given away at the carnival grounds. Time to be announced. You must have a ticket. You must be present to win.

Carnival opens immediately after the pony swim
6:30 p.m. - Entertainment on stage.
7:00 p.m. - Carnival attractions.
11:00 p.m. - Entertainment on stage.

Thursday, July 30, 2009 - Pony Penning, Auction of Ponies

8:00 a.m. to 12 noon - Auction of Ponies (yearlings or younger) owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Co. Carnival attractions after the auction.
6:30 p.m. - Entertainment on stage
7:00 p.m. - Carnival attractions.
11:00 p.m. - Entertainment on stage.

Extend your trip to Friday. Ponies swim back to Assateague.

Ponies leave carnival grounds around 11 am and should enter the water around noon.

The 2010 Pony Swim and Auction Swim July 28, Auction July 29, Swim Back July 30, 2010. The 2009 pony swim and auction took place July 29 and July 30, 2009. This year's auction: 70 ponies were sold, average cost $1,344.29, high bid $11,700, low bid $500, total sales $94,100.

All proceeds go to defray expenses and into Chincoteague Vol. Fire Co. general fund for maintenance and replacement of equipment and for emergency use for the benefit of the entire community. No pets are permitted on the Carnival grounds, in parking areas, or in vehicles (attended or unattended).
