May 1, 2000, all waters within the boundary of Assateague
Island National Seashore were closed to personal watercraft (PWCs - jet
skis). National Parks like Assateague were created to protect and
preserve water air and quality, wildlife habitat, and to provide natural
and recreational experiences for park visitors. While appropriate for
some waters, use of personal watercraft is inconsistent with National
Park Service management goals as mandated by the U.S. Congress.
Personal watercraft are only allowed access to the portion of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge known as Little Beach. Signs marking the water boundaries of Assateague Island National Seashore have not been posted. The park service defines a personal watercraft as "a vessel, usually less than 16 feet in length, which uses an inboard, internal combustion engine powering a water jet pump as its primary source of propulsion...intended to be operated by a person or persons sitting, standing, or kneeling on the vessel, rather than within the confines of the hull." These watercraft are usually known as jet skis, wavejammers, waverunners, or surf jets.
