In 1919 the money was given by the people of
the two Islands to build a Baptist Church for the community, making a better and
convenient place to worship under the leadership of Reverend 0. W. Sawyer. Prayer meetings
were held during the week and services on Sunday. The first and only wedding was held in this church on December 25, 1920. Miss Ida Jones of Assateague and Mr. Marvin Jester of Chincoteague were married by Reverend 0. W. Sawyer. It was one of the coldest nights ever experienced. I, the author, was invited to the wedding and so was my boyfriend on Assateague. Due to the extremely cold weather and slow method of traveling (in an open bateau) my friend and I nearly froze to death, and when we made it to the door of the church, as we opened it, I heard the bride say, "I will." Well, in spite of the difficulties, we did hear the final endings and were able to attend the reception that followed given by the family. We felt we were well paid for attending and returned home safely about 12 o'clock. What a night to be out for two young people! In 1922 this small Baptist Church was abandoned and moved to Chincoteague and converted into a small house. It may be seen today on the eastern side of the Island, the home of Mrs. Elijah Hill.
