I have many great memories of Chincoteague. My Dad was John Hollaway (Wimpy)
Rodgers. I would spend part of my summers on the island. I remember the pony
swim and the awesome Oyster Sandwiches. Being a resident of Texas now and living
close to the Gulf, believe me the Oysters are nothing like the ones from
Chincoteague. Without a doubt yours are the best anywhere. I have enjoyed
browsing the web site. God Bless

I have been to your beautiful island once. I did not get to spend as much time
as I wanted. My husband and I both love your home. We hope to spend some time
there next summer.

Back in l948-l95l My husband, Lt. Daniel R. Paul, USN, was stationed in
Chincoteague. We lived on Walnut St. in apts. that were converted from chicken
coops owned by Jesse and Earl Watson. It has always been the happiest and
peaceful time of my life. Dan was killed in action, Korea, July 23, l953, body
not recovered. He was a pilot on a volunteer mission up the Yalu River. I am now
80, retired from nursing and live in a retirement development. Chincoteague is a
wonderful memory.

We have just returned from our 40th trip to Chincoteague. For the last 22 years
we have stayed at the Island Motor Inn from the first month it opened. Reggie
and Ann Stubbs are two of our favorite people, and they run a very efficient
operation. We sometimes come three times a year - we love the Island so. We love
the courteous natives, the beautiful park (though we are not too happy about the
changes being implemented). The food at the Chincoteague Inn - our favorite
restaurant cannot be beat. We will come anytime during the year - except Pony
Penning month. We wish we could have found this Island Paradise before - we
wasted so much time.

My family has been going to Chincoteague every year since my mother was 3. This
year, my friend is going with her family, and she has never been to the ocean!
Therefore, I've been supplying them with information about the islands of
Chincoteague and Assateague. She has been thrilled. We leave in 2 weeks, and the
excitement is mounting. I really appreciate this site - really helps us get
through the year. Keep up the good work!

As a visitor to Chincoteague Island for over 10 years during pony penning week,
I love this little island. May I recommend AJ's restaurant, the Landmark,
Steamer's, Don's, and Bill's. All great food. I have enjoyed my stay at the
Mariner Motel also. The beach at Assateague Island can't be beat. Please don't
let this become another Ocean City, MD! This IS small town America!

Thank you for providing us with one of the most wonderful vacations we have ever
had. Our 7 year old daughter loved the beach, the wildlife, the lighthouse,
everything! Best of all she discovered the beach can be fun and beautiful even
without a boardwalk and rides. We have already booked our vacation at
Chincoteague for next year. Thank you keeping your town so lovely and your
people so friendly.

Nice site. When I was a child living in Chicago, in the early 60's, I remembered
seeing a documentary on your island and the pony swim. I thought it was awesome.
I never dreamed that someday I would go there. I visited it many times in the
past 16 years. I love the place. When I get there I feel like I'm going home.

My husband and I have been coming to Chincoteague since Oct. 1981 on advice from
my grandfather for a honeymoon trip. We stayed at Birchwood Manor Hotel and we
have been back every year since, though we have stayed at various other places,
the last few years we have camped. I hope Chincoteague never changes - we love
it there!!! One of our favorite restaurants is Landmark Crab House. A trip to
Steamers is always a must for great crabs and great fun! Our children love it
here, too.

I use this web site all the time. I love your island and come to visit often.
Usually there are just 2 of us. Either myself and my Mom, Daughter or my life
mate. We all love it there. My Mom is 92 and I try to get something waterfront
for her to enjoy watching the fisherman go and come. She is not able to enjoy
the Island by bike or walking as I do. Just always looking for a new place to
rent that doesn't cost a lot so I can afford to come there. My hope is to live
there in another 10 years. Thanks for the wonderful information.

I've been visiting Chincoteague every summer for the last 18 years. I now bring

Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted to watch the ponies swim over to
Chincoteague. I fell in love with my first pony when I was around 8 eight my
grandfather had gotten a pony from there. She was beautiful brown and white. I
have since wanted to go. But never had the chance, but I enjoyed the web site
very much. I loved the ponies on the beach. Thanks so much.

I have family heritage in Chincoteague. I invite anyone who wants a great
vacation to go to Chincoteague. I have gone every year when I was a kid for pony
penning. Chincoteague to me has been like Disney World for any other child. And
I am going this year. See ya there!

We just returned home from our 25th anniversary trip to Chincoteague. Thank you
for making it a memory that will remain in our hearts. We fell in love with your
town and want to come back as soon as possible. Our stay at the Best Value Inn
was so nice and all of the people we met were wonderful. We especially enjoyed
the food/service at Steamers, lunch (every day!) at Sugarbakers, and the nice
lady at the Blue Crab gift shop who treated us like old friends. Our walks on
the beach at Assateague, the ponies, and the lighthouse made my childhood
memories come to life again and our children are so jealous of us! We will be
back. Thanks again!

I love your website! I have long been fascinated about the subject of the
Chincoteague horses and am also fascinated by lighthouses! My husband and I
moved back to Virginia in October 2001 and plan to visit as many lighthouses as
possible. We also want to come for the annual swim and auction of the horses.

We'll return to the island for our 14th year. We've enjoyed watching our
children grow with each summer vacation on Chincoteague. It's nice to see this
place stay family friendly. Our picnics at the park, beach days, fishing,
dinners at Marias, Skippers, ice cream, the wildlife loop. Most of all the
people of this beautiful island. GOD bless you all for your hospitality.

My father's family is from Chincoteague and I have been there many times since

parents, staying at the campgrounds and have been bringing my kids there every
year ever since! I LOVE Chincoteague and I always will!!! I will be coming this

My family have been coming to Chincoteague every year since I was born (I'm 13
now). I love the entire area, especially Assateague. I thought Chincoteague was
commercialized but after spending a half-hour riding through Ocean City I
realized that it was nowhere near as developed. My favorite businesses on
Chincoteague are Mullers Ice Cream and The Landmark Crab House. Actually, in
about a month we will be on Chincoteague.

My grandmother Betty Hallman lives on the island and I love Chincoteague. Me and
my family would love to move down there - that is why I am searching your site

from reality.

Chincoteague is my favorite place to relax, and to meet my family when they are
vacationing. I have a permanent site at Maddox. The island is beautiful and
varied, but what makes it most special are the islanders, who are some of the
best people on earth.
May 19, 2002
Beverly, Pottsville, PA
We love the island! Please don't change a thing. You can walk the whole island
and meet friendly people wherever you go. I remember when McDonalds came to the
island. I was shocked and so where many other people. We thought it would become
too commercialized. But it did not. Plan a visit the first week of June..
Sunsets are wonderful on the bay side!

Planning to visit Chincoteague and Assateague at the end of May. There seems to
come a longing for the tranquility and beauty these islands have to offer. Let's
hope the lemmings keep going to the big beach towns and leave Chincoteague
alone.

My wife and I visit the island from April till November. We start flounder
fishing in April, in fact we just returned - 4 19 to 4 22 02 the wife caught a
26 inch flounder 5 pounds. Nice catch. The fishing is great at times. I would
suggest that you try flounder at four mouths area around 4 5 6 bouys. We also
caught a blue fish - he fought very well. We do practice catch and release at
times. We visit twice to three times a month. We suggest Toms Cove for camping -
reasonable prices, well stocked store, no beer but you can buy close.

Love your website and I love Chincoteague. Visit there every summer for the past

I enjoyed the website, it really showed me how much the island has changed. I
was last there in 1989 and had not been back until then for 20 years. I was born
on Chincoteague Island, in my grandfather's home, Alonzo Dennis, in 1946.
When I was there in 1989, my grandfather's house was moved up Main Street, from
its original location in front of the coast guard station. It was a rental
property at that time, and I am interested to find out whether or not it is
still a rental or has someone purchased it. If someone could let me know, I
would appreciate it very much. (Contact:

Chincoteague is an oasis in a world of vacation possibilities full of chain
restaurants, strip malls and long lines. We will be making our third visit there
this August, and are looking forward to it already. The beach, the boats, the
friendly people and all their cats - not to mention the breakfasts at Don's
Seafood- are the stuff of life!
Please, Chincoteague, never change!

My husbands' parents took us to visit your island in 1971 for the pony swim. Our
son was just over two years old and loved it. We have over the years been back
several times. Now we are getting to retirement age - we are seriously
considering coming there to retire. We watch the real estate pretty closely. Our
grand daughter would love the birds and horses.

Last year was my first visit. I came to see the pony swim and had a real
adventure walking down to where they swim on shore. I stayed at the Year of the
Horse Inn bed and breakfast and I recommend it for its location to the swim and
fairgrounds. This year, I'm coming back to do a little exploring of the island
and plan to do more shopping. The artwork is outstanding of all of the wildlife
and of course the ponies. It's a beautiful place to relax and the beach was
clean and not crowded at all.

The island and entire area is one of the best I have ever visited for birding.
No matter when you visit there is always something to see and the good

My son who is 5 loves to watch the ponies. Can't wait to visit again.

I think your beautiful island is the best vacation I have ever had. My first
trip there was in 1995 with my 3 children. We saw the pony swim and thought that
was great. The next year I came out with my fiancé and we came at a time when
the island wasn't so crowded. Ever since then we have been trying to get back,
but there is always something to stop us. The last time was Hurricane Dennis.
Maybe 2002.

It's a real nice place to visit. My family and I have been coming there for
about 8 to 9 years now, and we all love it there . The one year we had one of
the horses half of it's head in the car, we got some real good close up shots -
still wish I could have gotten the movie camera. It would've been one moment I
wouldn't forget. Thanks for now. There are more stories to talk about.

Jeanette Sullivan, Mt Cook, Wellington, New Zealand
An excellent website, with a great deal to look at. I was particularly
interested, of course, in the pictures of the pony swim. They are great! No
wonder they are talked about worldwide. We had a herd of around 1500 Kaimanawa
wild horses in the middle North Island up until around 4 years ago. Our Govt.
intended rounding up 1000 and shooting them which caused a huge outcry. As an
alternative they rounded up 1000 and tried to find homes for them all. Around
half that number just "disappeared" and we know they went to farmers to be sent
to the abbatoirs. Each year our Department of Conservation does a count by
helicopter, say there are too many (they say 500 is sufficient) and muster what
they say is over and above the 500. Consequently the horse lobby people believe
there are very few left on their home ground. A sad affair. So it's great to
learn about your ponies. Kind regards.

We visited last Thurs. night & Friday. We enjoyed the Island very much. We
stayed at the Driftwood Lodge & enjoyed its peacefulness & smallness. We ate at
AJ's & loved the fresh seafood & steak. We even got to climb the lighthouse. We
were disappointed to learn that the tram tour was no longer available.

I have been visiting Chincoteague Island for the past 10 years. A friend, John
Doak, who has been coming to Chincoteague for the past 25 years and had a summer
home there introduced your island to me. We usually stay at the Anchor Inn on
Main Street because it is convenient for docking the boat, and have stayed at
Tom's Cove Campgrounds. The first time I visited your island I was very
surprised. It is so laid back and relaxing. The Island natives are so friendly
and are genuinely glad to see you. I always have a good time and come home
relaxed. It is always hard driving across the bridge on the way home because
there is a strong feeling of wanting to stay even just one more day. I recommend
Chincoteague for a vacation spot to friends all the time. Even for those that do
not own a boat, one can be rented, or people can just enjoy the beach, the pool,
or the small town atmosphere. I hope to continue visiting your Island. Every
year I see more homes going up, new stores, and of course, the friendly people.

This is the first year that we have not gone to the island of Puerto Rico for
vacation. As a result, we decided to take day trips this month of July.
Chincoteague Island is our first choice. We have wonderful memories of our stay
there many years ago when our grandchildren were small. We will be taking our
great-grandchildren now.

My husband and I first came to Chincoteague on a trip to Virginia. We didn't
know about it (except for my remembrance of a book I vaguely remembered from "kiddie
lit" in college called Misty of Chincoteague. On our visit around Va, we decided
to take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel and on our way up Rt. 13 saw a
billboard advertising the Pony Penning and lo and behold it was THE NEXT DAY! We
stopped a "million" places or so it seemed and there were NO ROOMS! We ended up
in Cambridge MD in a rented room at some nice lady's house and got up EARLY the
next morning to come down for the swim. The ponies came ashore right in front of
us. I was HOOKED! We didn't know about the carnival or anything so we left as
soon as I bought a book HUNDRED ACRE WELCOME. After reading it, I realized we
had missed a LOT of the experience so we returned in 1974 with our three
children ages 4yrs-16 months! Had a ball. We have returned several times but our
last visit was in 1985 when we FINALLY realized a dream. We bought ...[posted

I have been using your website to research accommodations and whatever about Chincoteague. I knew almost nothing about the island when I started

The first time that I heard about the Chincoteague ponies is when I was in
middle school. I've been a horse lover ever since I was little. The first time I
heard about them was when my mom got Misty of Chincoteague..I was in
love. I didn't realize that the island ponies I had read about and loved so much
were real. I was so excited when I found out that this place was real. I begged
my mom to take me there. I really love this web site. I found out about the web
site from a magazine subscription that I have to Horse Illustrated and
Horse & Rider. Now that I am grown and on my own I would really like to come
to Chincoteague and see the pony roundup that goes on every year. I am so glad
that I found this web site. Now I have access to all the information I need to
come and see this wonderful event take place. I think it's wonderful that your
community does something like this that is open to the public, so that the
horses actually go to good homes instead of a slaughter house. It really makes
me THANK YOU

This was a great site to see...the oyster festival sounds like a lot of fun. I
was born in Chincoteague when my father was stationed at the naval base there in
1958. Left before I ever had any memories so the thought of going there to see
"where it all began" is an appealing one....great website...Thanks

Just came across this site by accident. Thought I would add my comments. Had the opportunity to visit Chincoteague this past
summer and totally enjoyed the experience. Stayed at the Channel Bass Inn. Although it was a bit pricey (once converted to
Canadian dollars) Barbara and David offered excellent hospitality and made all their guests feel at
home. What a beautiful part of the U.S. to visit. So peaceful and relaxing. Am
looking forward to a return visit!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of the wonderful people who made my stay on Chincoteague Island such a wonderful
and unforgettable experience. From the proprietor of the motel to the young lady manning the cash register at a convenience store, everyone was so
helpful and pleasant. A friend and I came for the oyster fest on a lark. I was amazed to see so many people from so many different places. I even met
some people from my home state of PA who proudly hoisted a Penn State flag. I am doing my darndest to save up to return again this year. Again, thank
you.

I had to write and tell you how wonderful your website is and how much it has helped me in planning my family vacation. I
happened upon it about a week ago and have spent many hours exploring your links. It is so thorough and informative. I have never seen a site so well
done and helpful. Everything I needed to find was easy to find and all the links actually worked, which is a problem with many many other sites.
I found a great place to stay in oyster bay, looking for a nice quiet place to vacation for a week away from the maddening crowds. I can't wait to visit Chincoteague Island. You have done a great job with this website. I really felt as if you were personally inviting us to visit you and it was a very unique experience browsing the site. Congratulations to your members and staff for a job well done. We will certainly stop and say hello when we arrive Aug. 18.

My family and I love Chincoteague Island. Such a peaceful and beautiful place to visit. Clean, beautiful beaches - great
surf! My son and grandson from California look forward each year to our week's vacation on your island. I dream of retiring someday to
Chincoteague Island. Ahhhh!

It has been many years now, since I have vacationed here. I had such a memorable
time with my family, that I often think back to it. We plan to vacation here
again soon. We have given thoughts of our retirement on Chincoteague Island.

What a great place to visit. My family enjoyed it. The beaches were clean and it was nice to see that there were lifeguards! We
have spent 19 yrs at Cape Hatteras but never enjoyed it as much as we did Chincoteague Island. We will return next year.

My wife and daughter had a great time touring the lighthouse. We made a special trip this weekend from Hag. Md. It was well
worth it. Keep up the good work and keep Chincoteague quaint and family orientated. There are not to many places left like yours. Thanks.

I was born in Chincoteague during the pony run of 1954, and have enjoyed returning every few years to find that
it's managed to preserve its charm after so many decades. Now I find the Chincoteague
website charming and elegant as well. Very good work!

I love your island and am very glad of this website so I can learn more about
it. I try to visit every year and am looking forward to July in 2001.

I came to the islands as a child, and haven't made it back for a few years now. I am presently a student studying Geology and
Environmental Studies. I still remember things that I learned from the Sea Shore Ranger Badges when I was younger. I really think that you guys have a
great program there. Plus the island is beautiful. Toms cove was always my favorite because you could see all kinds of sea life.

I have spent most of my life on this island during the summers and breaks. I love the people and the island and if I could
would move there and stay.

Just wanted to let you know that this web site is my home page. Chincoteague is one of our favorite places on earth. We are
coming down to spend Thanksgiving on the island with our daughter and son-in-law. We are staying at the Sea Shell Motel and would like to know
which restuarants will be open on Thanksgiving. Thank you in advance for your help.

My husband, 3 year old daughter, and I visited your island from Friday, August 18 - Monday, August 21, 2000, and absolutely LOVED
it. It was just what I needed before beginning the 2000-2001 school year and a perfect way to end our
daughter's summer vacation. It's funny but every time we pass a McDonald's, she immediately cries out "Mommy I want to
stop to feed the ponies!!" We are telling everyone about it and can't wait to return.

Our visit to Chincoteague and Assateague during pony penning was great, even relaxing!! We enjoyed renting mopeds and riding our
bikes around both. The beach was beautiful on Assateague. After having the book "Misty" read to me when I was a little girl and reading an
article in a travel magazine several years ago I finally made the trip. We brought our
camper and stayed at Maddox\'s Family Camp ground, a very nice and CLEAN campground. We plan to attend next
year's pony penning and bring our three children, and we have hopes of bringing home two
ponies for our "horse crazed" girls.

The website is great! I'm researching info for a trip back to Chincoteague
to attend a friend's wedding and it was neat being able to pull up most of the
hotel's websites and look at their rate info. The interior views are extremely
helpful to me. It will be wonderful to come back and see all the changes that
have happened to Chincoteague since we moved away almost six years ago. This
website helps me keep up with the changes that are happening w/businesses I
loved as a resident. Keep up the great work!

You have done an excellent job in your web site. My wife and I are planning our first visit to the
Eastern Shore, and based on the accommodations info you made available, we probably will stay in Chincoteague.

We just got back from our third year in a row vacation. We have stayed at
Holiday Cottages all three years. You can not ask for two nicer people than
Jerry and Bob. We are already talking about next year. We all enjoy the island
and the beach. We were there the week before pony penning, and we tried to say
another day which was Saturday, but every one was all filled up. We just have to
plan better next year.

taking a fire class in Nassawadox. The people are very friendly. Hope to get back soon.

As a young child, my grandparents took us to Chincoteague Island on the ferry.
We visited Misty's home and bought the book, the story of misty. This is a fond
memory of my childhood. I have always wanted to visit again and see the pony
swim. Now I am 47, and Wednesday, I am bringing my children to see the pony swim
and visit the island. I am sure they will live with the same fond memories that
I have had all these years.

Just wanted to share some advice for anyone planning to come for the Pony Swim! Last year was the first one
I've attended, and it was awesome. Can't wait for this year's event! This is what I learned:
Bring a blanket to sit on! and something to drink, something to eat, and something to read while
you're waiting. Plus, save some film for after the swim, when the ponies are in their corral.
It's one of your best opportunities to see the ponies up close!

well as an indispensable channel of information for your members.

We Love your Island. We've been coming to the Oyster Festival since 1986 and the Island itself since the early
70's. We are spending a week there in August and look forward to another memorable time
at the Oyster Festival in October.

My wife & I have been visiting Chincoteague ever since we've been married, which has been 15 yrs, and my family and I have
been visiting ever since I was little, so it's been a family tradition for as long as I can remember. This website is exactly what
I've been waiting for! All the familiar places are here: the Mr. Whippy, the Driftwood,
Bill's, as well as the new ones. As much a I'd wanted Chincoteague to be our "little
secret," I guess it was inevitable that such a treasure couldn't be hidden for long. Oh well. . .

Your site is wonderful; the only improvement idea that I have would be to add employment opportunities in the area of Chincoteague.
My husband and I along with our children fell in love with your area when we visited in May and we are visiting Chincoteague again in August of this
year.

My family and I visit Chincoteague and Assateague two or three times each yr. We have done this for about 5 yrs. We spend the week
there at each Pony Penning. I want to commend you on the things you have to offer children. The Ranger Club is a true education. It is such a
quiet, warm and lovely place to be. I love it all. Thanks for all the hard work
you do to keep the island the best in the world. Keep up the good work and
keep the island like it is. I have some of the most beautiful pictures
from there. To me it is the best place in the USA to spend a week during Pony Penning.

Great website. We have been vacationing here for the past 12 years and love it more and more every year. We stay at the Sea Shell
Motel and we will be here the first week of June. We can\'t say enough about
Nancy, Bob and Chris Conklin - three of the nicest people we have met.

I really enjoyed browsing your web site. I never realized that the wild ponies existed until I read an article in
Country Living magazine. I would love to visit Chincoteague some day to see the
ponies make their swim. I have been near there on vacations, but never realized... Looking forward to seeing them!

I am a native and life-long resident of Chincoteague. Though tourism is our primary
livelihood and we depend on tourism for our economy, it amazes me that so many visitors say they want Chincoteague to
keep its small town charm... yet most talk of living here someday. We see more and more tourists and year-round residents everyday. This is one
reason we may lose our downtown bridge. Also, my biggest peeve is of tourists visiting and not obeying the post 25mph speed limit on the island.
I have been late for mainland appointments because of tourists doing less than 25 and stopping in the middle of the road to sightsee. Also, the speed
limit on the causeway is 55 mph though it has yet to be posted since construction last summer. We are
gratetful to the tourists, but please be considerate of us islanders that aren't on vacation. Thank you

I learned about Chincoteague and Assateague Islands first from reading the book Misty of
Chincoteague to my children. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to look up more information about the islands. Your
web site was very helpful in gaining even more of an appreciation for life on the islands. My family would love to visit someday. Thank you for all the
history we had the opportunity to learn about because of this web site. Keep up the great work.

I am enjoying reading your newly discovered website, and though many years have gone by since I was at
Chincoteague (60 years, to be exact), I still have many fond and vivid memories of my first year in
elementary school and of events that I experienced while living there on North Main Street and also in a house near "Deep Hole". I can even remember
names of one or two residents. Thanks for the site.

I would just like to say that your website is one of the most beautifully designed websites I have ever visited. It is easy to
navigate, and the wildlife pictures are incredible! My husband and I will be vacationing in Bethany Beach and Ocean City the last week of July, and we
hope to travel to Chincoteague for the Pony Swim/Penning. I read the "Misty" books as a child, and look forward to visiting the Chincoteague area
even more since visiting this site!

This was a great venture for me. I saw this article about Chincoteague and the ponies in my Country Living Magazine and went to
my computer and the rest is the best. Great articles and news for me to use in the up coming summer months. Thank you so much for this information.

We love Chincoteague! Assateague Island is so wonderful! The no alcohol on the beach is great.
It's such a different atmosphere than any place we have ever been. Every summer is like
coming home again. THANK YOU FOR MANY GREAT VACATIONS IN THE PAST AND MANY THAT
ARE SURE TO COME!
(We can't wait to bring our children there, when we have some!)

Ten years ago, I went to Chincoteague Island with my family. I was five years old and I can still remember it like I was there
yesterday. I had the best time there and I hope to return soon. Everything was just so much more peaceful and soothing.

We've visited twice with our grandson, and had been there with his mother when she was little.
It's as nice now as it was then. Saw a show about Misty and it brought back
memories and my grandson wants us to visit this summer. I thought I'd try the internet and there you were.
It's a great site. Thanks.

We have visited your island for the past two years and loved it. Is there any chance of a
Jersey boy moving south with his wife and four kids and carving out a living
there? I just can't stand the craziness here. Keep up the good work,
enjoyed your website, see you again this summer.

We spent out honeymoon on your island nearly 9 years ago. By your wonderful web site, I see it
hasn't lost any of it's charm. We were there for one of your hurricanes and loved every minute of it. We
hope to come back for a second honeymoon soon. A unforgettable place!

I have been driving down to Chincoteague for the last ten years for the Pony Swim and Auction. I really enjoy the small town
feeling in Chincoteague. Please don't let your town become "another Ocean
City." I love the beach at Assateague Island, the sunset on the bay, the many good
restaurants (and seafood). As a senior citizen, this is a perfect place for a vacation.

My family and I have called Chincoteague our 2nd home for over forty years. We have shared wonderful memories here. We will be
introducing our son Luke, who will be two in February, to the island this summer. I know we will continue to make cherished memories. Please
don't change the small town way of Chincoteague, the quaintness is what makes it
special!
