Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on
neighboring Assateague Island is only about a mile from the hotel. Over 260 species of
birds have been spotted on the refuge. Of course, the island is also the home of the
famous Chincoteague ponies, sometimes found grazing along the main road or in the nearby
marshes. |
![]() The Refuge is also great for hiking and biking with miles of trails inviting you to explore the pine woods, marshes, and freshwater ponds. Bikes may be rented at several locations on Chincoteague near the Refuge. The Assateague Lighthouse, built in 1833 (and rebuilt in 1867), is just a short walk from a parking area along the Island's main road. Located on a hill about 22 feet above the mean high water mark, the lighthouse itself is 142 feet high, and its light is visible up to 19 nautical miles. (The lighthouse is open to visitors only a few times during the year.) |
![]() Assateague Island National Seashore, also just a few minutes by car from the hotel, offers 37 miles of undeveloped beaches for swimming, surfing, kite flying and surf fishing. Chincoteague shops offer surf and body board rentals and sales, and fishing gear and bait are also available on Chincoteague. During the summer months, lifeguards watch over a section of the beach near the bathhouses - and toilet facilities, changing stalls, and outdoor showers are available. And, of course, any time during the year, you can enjoy a beach walk or jog. |
