As the water receded, it left behind unbelievable amounts of debris, some of it having been carried to Chincoteague on the tides from fifty miles away. Mounds of seaweed tangled around everything, creating heaps of trash that blocked the roads and sidewalks. 

Two-thirds of the boats on the Island were damaged, many of which were found lying helter-skelter in streets and yards.


A 16-foot boat crashed through the front of this house on north Main St. The furniture floated out on the tide.
