The photographer's home, located about two blocks from Main Street behind the Sea Shell Motel, was flooded with 14 inches of water throughout. Because the Conklin family didn't evacuate, they had time to raise all of their appliances and furniture high enough to avoid the water. Standing on the fireplace hearth is five year old Kelly Conklin. After the family left home, the tide rose over the bricks. As soon as the water receded, the Conklins used a garden hose to wash out the mud and muck. The car survived - the seats were removed for drying, and friends helped repair the car's engine. |
